You will see these variations of spellings all across the internet. In fact, you probably have to log in on your electronic devices multiple times per day!

This is rather a debated topic. So, what is the difference?

The main difference is that login acts as the noun or adjective, whereas log in to and log into act as the verb.

Below you will find definitions of login, log in and log into with example sentences, so you can use these terms correctly.

In computing, a login is a process that provides identity verification. This is done so users can access data or computer services.

Login acts as a noun or adjective, for example, the company’s login credentials, the login page, the login screen, the website’s login.

When you click the login button, you are usually required to enter your username/email and pin/password as an identity verification process; we don’t want any random person trying to access our accounts!

Example sentences with login would be:

When you log in to a device or application, you are verifying your identity so that you can access the data or services available.

When you log in to a website, you provide your username and password for verification.

Log in is a verb and it is what you do when you want to use any device. It is the act of logging in to a technological device, application or database.

Alternative ways to say log in include “log on” and “sign in.”

Example sentences with “log in” or “log in to” would be:

Log in to and log into are phrasal verbs that both mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

When I typed the “log in to” sentences that I wrote previously into Grammarly, my grammar checker, I received no error. The following sentences are grammatically correct:

I log into my computer every day to check my email.

I’m having trouble logging into my account; can you help me?

It’s not safe to log into my bank account on a shared WIFI network.

From my own experience and the general consensus from native speakers on English language forums, most prefer to write log in to rather than log into.

Even though it might sound like “log into” when they say it aloud, people tend to write it as log in to.

While log into is not grammatically incorrect and can be found in the dictionary, typically, log in to is preferred.
